Kethuus
Skippers who, around the year 1875, wanted to sail a boat full of peat from the peatlands through the canal had to pay a fee to do so.

To prevent the boats from passing unnoticed, a chain was stretched next to the Kethuus (Chain House). This prevented boats from simply passing the toll house. Only when the skipper had paid did the chain come down and the boat could pass. In this Kethuus on the Westerstraat, toll was charged by the city of Groningen in those days.
