The church in Vriescheloo was built in the eighteenth century. An earlier church on this site was destroyed in 1672 by the troops of the Bishop of Münster.

Originally, on this spot stood a wooden hidden church where the 'Old Flemish', a Baptist congregation, met. This hidden church stood behind a house called Het Block. When church and state were definitively separated, hideaway churches like this one were no longer needed. The 'Old Flemings' and the 'Waterlanders and Flemings' were merged in 1809 to form United Mennonite Congregation Groningen, after which a stone church with neo-classical influences arose on the site of the wooden hidden church. In 1852-1983, the church was extended. The house in front was also closed so that the church could be seen from the street.
