Scheemder kerk
The Dollard regularly burst its banks. When this happened again in 1509, the residents of Scheemde decided to move their entire village one and a half kilometres to the north.

The cruciform church was demolished and rebuilt at its new location as a hall church. In 1570, the old freestanding tower was replaced by a new one. Here, the people of Scheemda could take shelter safely during storms. In 1874, the church council decided to sell their organ to the Rijksmuseum. The beautifully painted organ shutters were exhibited there for many years. They have since been moved to the museum’s storage facility, and investigations are underway to determine whether the organ might be returned to Scheemda. The organ currently in the church, a two-manual instrument, was built by Roelof Meijer in 1874. The organ balustrade from the original organ is still present in the Scheemder kerk. Key contact: G.
