Synagoge Bad Nieuweschans

From 1630, Jews from Germany came to the border town of Nieuweschans to settle there. It was quite some time before they had access to a synagogue: in 1811.

From the beginning of the 20th century, the number of Jewish residents declined, so the building could no longer serve as a synagogue after 1925. During the Second World War, all but two Jewish residents of the municipality were deported and murdered by the Germans. To commemorate them, a plaque was placed on the wall of the synagogue, which was restored in the 1970s.
