The burden of maintenance was placing too great a strain on the church’s dwindling membership. Commissioned by the new owner, the church underwent extensive renovation and extension in 2005. This was carried out under the direction of the Japanese architect Moriko Kira. Not only was the interior renovated, but the verger’s house was also refurbished. The most striking feature of the renovated church is the glass entrance building that has been added to the church, connecting and providing access to the separate spaces. The church is still used for services by the Remonstrant congregation, but also serves as an office for the Old Groningen Churches Foundation.
