Hoetmansmeer

Between the vast fields of the municipality of Pekela lies Hoetmansmeer, a small hamlet with a special name.

This was once a large peat lake that gave the landscape its character. The water has since disappeared, but the name lives on - not only in the village, but also in the forest that the Forestry Commission has created here.

Today, in this young forest area, you walk along winding paths, clearings and quiet stretches of nature where birds have found their home. The contrast between the past of swamps and peat extraction and today's green landscape makes Hoetmansmeer a place with a story.

A visit to Hoetmansmeer is thus not only a walk through nature, but also a journey through the history of Groningen.
