Nature and the surrounding area
Schouwerzijl is beautifully situated on the Reitdiep and the Kromme Raken, between Groot Maarslag, Schaphalsterzijl and Schouwen. With just over 90 residents, it is a small, friendly village in the Hogeland region of Groningen. It features a harbour, a sluice, a village vegetable garden and orchard, a jetty for visitors, a small playground and a swimming raft. But above all, it offers plenty of peace and quiet, space and panoramic views. You’ll find yourself right in the heart of an ideal area for cycling, boating and walking. The Pieterpad walking route runs practically right past here. Let yourself be charmed by the old Groningen villages and their centuries-old churches, built on mounds. Nearby attractions include Winsum, de Theefabriek Houwerzijl de Theefabriek and the fishing village of Zoutkamp. Verhildersum Manor in Leens is also well worth a visit. National Park Lauwersmeer is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. And a day trip to Schiermonnikoog, a journey on the Reitdiepveer, a mudflat walking tour from Pieterburen or a visit to the bustling city of Groningen are all highly recommended.
