DE KERK Onderdendam
On Bedumerweg in Onderdendam, you’ll find a distinctive church in the Amsterdam School style.
In 1932, architect Albert Wiersema from Bedum was commissioned to build a nieuwe kerk for the Reformed congregation of Onderdendam. The building, which had been used as a church since 1914, had become too small for the rapidly growing congregation. Wiersema designed a hall church in which the influence of the Amsterdam School style is clearly visible. The fan-shaped layout of the wooden pews is a good example of this, as are the wood-panelled parabolic vault, the platform bearing the pulpit, and the stained-glass windows. The interior remains largely in its original condition. Another notable feature is the tall tower with its mitre-shaped spire.
