Schutsluis Vierde Verlaat

In 1841, the city of Groningen commissioned the construction of the lock 'Vierde Verlaat'. The lock is also called Sapsverlaat, because of the lock masters from the second half of the nineteenth century: J.E. Sap and O. Sap.

A leave is a lock with two doors. The water can change height between these two doors so that boats can pass through despite the difference in water level. Originally, the lock with swing bridge was built as a single lock. As boat traffic increased, a second lock chamber and swing bridge were added in 1910. Many businesses settled around the locks. It was the ideal place to trade with waiting peat barges. The lock is a reminder of the peat extraction and flourishing shipping industry in the Veenkoloniën.
