De Westerhornermolen

De Westerhornermolen , or Westerhorner for short, is a polder mill situated between the village of Grijpskerk and the hamlet of Gaarkeuken. The mill drained the area covered by the Westerhornermolenpolder water board near Grijpskerk.

The windmill was built in 1829 and remained in operation using wind power until the 1950s. After a diesel engine was installed, wind power was no longer used to drive the mill, and it fell into serious disrepair. In 1988, the tide turned and the mill was restored to its former glory. The screw pump can be driven by either electricity or wind power, and as such the mill remains a functioning pumping station. A number of volunteer millers regularly use the mill to grind grain using wind power.
