Johan’s work stands out for its flowing, bright colours. He builds up his work in multiple transparent layers of colour. Unlike with blown glass, where form is usually the starting point, colour and design take precedence; form serves primarily as their medium. The forms are usually simple and seem almost to have arisen naturally from the rotating movement of the blowpipe. In doing so, Johan gives colour and design the freedom to play a role in shaping the form, thereby achieving a more harmonious balance between colour and the object. Nature is his inspiration. In the patterns that emerge in the glass, one can often discover creatures of nature—such as fish, birds and animals—living in extraordinary landscapes both above and below the water. The journey – ‘being on the move’ – is Johan’s passion, his driving force. The end result, the tranquil glass object, is not the goal but the outcome of this inward journey. Molten glass is water in fire; it is ‘magic’.
