This former church dates back to the thirteenth century. In 1656, the church was rebuilt and the tower raised. Following the restoration, which was completed in 1985, the building has become a cultural centre for the North-West Groningen region. Its ecclesiastical character has, however, been preserved. A striking feature of the interior is the ceiling paintings. These were added during the most recent restoration by Wout Muller and Matthijs Röling.
