Kerk Nieuw Beerta

The church of New Beerta can be seen from afar. It is a Waterstaatskerk and special because of the different architectural styles in which it was built.

Take a closer look

The church of Nieuw-Beerta was built in 1856 as a replacement for a 17th-century church. At that time, between 1824 and 1875, many churches were built with financial support from the Ministry of Water Works. These churches were called Waterstaat churches. The simple hall church of Nieuw-Beerta is also such a Waterstaat church. Often, these churches do not have a particular architectural style, but have various neoclassical elements. This church was placed here in memory of pastor B.J. Ader. He was pastor at this church since 1938, but was shot dead in 1944 during World War II because of his resistance work. His wife Johanna Ader-Appels wrote the well-known book Een Groninger pastorie in de storm about the war years. A marble memorial stone can be seen next to the pulpit.
