The sky-blue domed ceiling, adorned with golden stars, the sun and the moon, makes a lasting impression on visitors, who are always pleasantly surprised by the hall’s distinctive sacred atmosphere. Until recently, the synagogue was still in use by a religious community. The Old Groningen Churches Foundation has restored the building and the adjoining Jewish school, and there is now a permanent exhibition on the Jewish history of Appingedam, told through the stories of former Jewish residents. The former school building is now home to B&B De Vijgenhof.
The synagogue hall regularly hosts concerts and lectures, and can also be hired for parties, meetings, dinners, weddings and cultural gatherings. It is also possible to hold Jewish services.
