In 1990, the city of Groningen celebrated its 950th anniversary. To mark this occasion, a contemporary city gate was erected along each of the city’s main access roads. Architect Daniel Libeskind designed these city gates. At the southern approach stands an electricity pylon topped with seven metal flames. These represent the cycle of the week. On the first day of the week, one flame is lit, and one more is added each day. Also, every morning and evening at twenty minutes to eleven, the number 10.40 lights up; this marks the year in which the city of Groningen was first mentioned in a document.
