The oldest foundation of the church is dated to the 12th century, when a wooden church arose. During the 13th century, the present stone church building was built in several stages. In the 15th century, the church broadly took on its present appearance. The church was restored in the 1970s, with many original elements brought back into view. Among other things, the church is known for its unusual paintings and for its 16th-century sacrificial box. The church is in use by the Protestant congregation of Noordlaren-Glimmen. When church services are held, the church is open for viewing on Sunday afternoons. The church is also used for funeral and wedding services, and concerts are sometimes held there.
