Tuinderij Eikemaheert in Loppersum is such a place where you immediately feel the tranquillity of the Groningen countryside. The gardeners here work on a piece of land they lease from Piet and Angela, the entrepreneurs behind the organic farm De Eikemaheert. This collaboration is a fine example of local agriculture that is all about craftsmanship, attention to the soil and respect for nature.
The fields are hidden between flower borders and wide views. You will see a wide variety of vegetables, all grown organically and growing with the seasons. In spring the first young leaves and herbs appear, in summer the land is full of colour and fragrance, and in autumn you will see hearty cabbages, pumpkins and tubers sprouting up. The diversity of plants and flowers makes it a fine place for anyone who loves nature and the outdoors.
An extra reason to come here is De Eikemaheert's shop, which is open every Saturday morning. In this atmospheric farm shop, products from the garden are for sale, along with other regional products of organic origin. You'll find fresh vegetables, pickled delicacies, eggs, herbs and sometimes flowers or seasonal specialities. An inspiring stop for cyclists, walkers and anyone who loves local food.
Walking around here, you will see how close and pure local food can be. No big machines, but hands in the soil, clever growing techniques and a lot of love for the trade. The horticulture cooperates with residents of the region through a harvest share system, so people come across the yard every week to pick up their vegetable parcels. It creates a warm, connected atmosphere on the premises.
TIP!
As a harvest share participant, you take out a subscription to the horticulture and receive a weekly pack with five to six seasonal vegetables. The packs are available all year round and are supplemented in winter with vegetables from fellow local farmers. You pick them up at the Eikemaheert or at pick-up points in the region and in the city of Groningen. So you always enjoy fresh, local vegetables close to home.
