Bollardjacket New Scheemda

Not all mills are large and impressive; some are charming in their simplicity. This is certainly true of the tjasker at polder mill De Dellen in Nieuw-Scheemda - the only post-mill in all of Groningen!

This small mill was built in 1992 in Wildervank and first turned in 1993. It was used specifically to supply water to a small nature reserve in Midwolda. There, the spot turned out not to be ideal: too many trees, poor access and no shelter for a miller. So in 2001, the Oldambt Windmill Foundation found a better spot next to De Dellen.

Since then, the tjasker has been happily turning with the wind again. It is vulnerable though: in 2013 a rod broke during a heavy storm, but fortunately it was quickly repaired.

A tjasker may only be a small mill, but it shows beautifully how cleverly people used to make use of wind power. And on a visit to Nieuw-Scheemda, you can now see it in action yourself - a special piece of Groningen mill heritage in miniature form.
