Kerk Wirdum

Built at the beginning of the 13th century, this church represents the early phase of Romano-Gothic. A 'knee niche' can be found in the north wall, which is quite unusual.

Inside, there are several murals on display, including an enthroned Christ and (probably) a St Barbara, thought to have been painted around 1400. Roman remains were found around the church in 1984, including bronze statuettes of Minerva and Mercury. The organ was built by the van Oeckelen brothers from Glimmen in 1879. In 1962, the organ was restored by D. Mulder of Uithuizen, after which it was restored once more in 1999 by the firm Van der Putten. During this work, the organ case was repainted in its original colour and the decorative mouldings were also refitted.
