Zernikeborg

Upon arrival at the Zernike complex, the Zernikeborg immediately catches the eye. Thanks to its round shape, but also to its colour and relatively low construction.

The borg is the hub for ICT infrastructure in the Northern Netherlands and houses the university's computer centre, a knowledge centre for internet applications, computer education, a High Performance Computer Centre and theatre presenting 3D visualisations, among other things. The round façade contrasts not only with its surroundings but also with the interior of the building itself. Indeed, for the interior, rectangular spaces were chosen in a floor plan consisting mainly of straight lines. The circular façade of the Zernikeborg is clad with ceramic slates, which form a soft texture due to their small size and overlap. The walls of the functional blocks are made of clean concrete. The other materials and colours are kept very sober and natural; this further expresses the shape of the building.
