The meadowland to the north of Selwerderhof Cemetery has a rich history. In the Middle Ages, for example, a castle (Selwerd Castle) and a monastery (Maria Virgo) stood here. There was also a gallows field on this site. Since 1975, the site has been a protected national archaeological monument. The monument is mainly underground and is therefore barely visible to the public. However, the area can be easily surveyed from the observation tower, and it is also possible to walk here along the specially laid-out footpaths. The boundaries of the historic area are marked by four hands featuring poems inspired by the site’s history.
