Uitkijktoren Selwerd

Take a closer look

The meadow area to the north of Selwerderhof cemetery has a rich history. In the Middle Ages, for instance, a castle (Kasteel Selwerd) and a convent (Maria Virgo) stood here. There was also a gallows field here. Since 1975, the site has been a protected archaeological national monument. The monument is mainly underground and is therefore hardly visible to the public. However, the area is easy to overlook thanks to the watchtower and it is also possible to walk here on the specially laid out footpaths. To where the historical area reaches is made visible by four hands with poems inspired by the history of the place.
