The Walfriduskerk in Hellum is one of the oldest churches in Groningen, built around 1100. The walls consist of tuff, interspersed with bricks and have a foundation of heavy boulders, which are still visible in a few places. This has created a distinctive exterior.
In the 15th century, the church had two different towers, one attached and one detached. The detached tower was demolished in 1871. Some remnants of this can still be found next to the current building. The remaining tower has a wooden superstructure.
Inside, you will find a gentleman's bench from 1160, a pulpit with soundboard from 1759 and some sarcophagi. The organ dates from 1819, with parts from 1661. Both mourning boards from the 16th and 17th centuries are among the oldest in the province. One is by Frans Rengers who in the 16th century inhabited a borg south-east of the church.
