Most of the shoreline is a nature reserve, but at Steendam there is a marina and a range of leisure facilities. Cycle paths run around the lake, forming part of the Schildmeer circuit. A wooden cycle bridge was built for this purpose in 2009. It crosses the Duurswold drainage canal – which flows through the lake – at the Sans Souci pumping station.
