Het Voorgesneden Paradepaard

The building used to house a horse butcher. Now you can still find a side view of a horse on the door.

Take a closer look

The building at number 23 housed a horse butcher before World War II. This butcher was one of the many Jewish shopkeepers who contributed to the growth and prosperity of Folkingestraat. Horses were delivered at specific times and herded through the corridor to the slaughterhouse. The relief shows a side view of a horse and between the two walls we can just see it walking into the butcher's shop. The tiles behind the horse are authentic butcher's tiles, only the colour has changed.
