Zuidlaardermeer is located in Natura 2000 area the Hunzedal. It covers a total of 671 ha, 121 ha of which are riparian and reed lands. The lake originated in the ice age as a natural widening of the river Hunze. In the 12th century, peat extraction began east of the lake. This created an important shipping route from the Hunze via the lake to Groningen. In the early 21st century, the so-called madelands were reclaimed, creating the Zuidlaardermeer as it is today. A beautiful rural clean lake with unique reed and grassland vegetation.
