Galgenveld Paddepoelsterweg
At first glance, the field between Paddepoelsterweg and Penningsdijk looks like an ordinary grassy patch. Nothing could be further from the truth; the field has a remarkable history.
Have a look now
In the distant past, this grassy area served as a gallows field. It was here that the condemned were hanged. Such fields were often laid out along major access routes to the city, on the border between two judicial districts. The fields were situated in these locations to act as a deterrent to travellers entering the city. Upon entering the city, they could see what awaited them should they commit any crimes. The Paddepoelsterweg was one such major access route to the city of Groningen, which is why a gallows field was also located here. Until a few years ago, virtually nothing was known about it, but the field was discovered on a map dating from 1730–1736.
