Graaf Adolf monument
In memory of this battle, the Graaf Adolf monument stands in Heiligerlee. Count Adolf of Nassau fought on the side of the States against the Spanish and was killed in this battle.

In 1568, the Battle of Heiligerlee was fought. This marked the start of the Eighty Years’ War. Alongside the statue, a black poplar was planted when the site was laid out in 1873. With a circumference of 5 metres, this tree is one of the thickest in the province of Groningen.
