Stel's Meulen
Stel's Meulen is an octagonal corn mill, originally from 1851. The name refers to the family that owned it for almost a quarter of a century.
In 1856, the mill was built as a ground-sailer. Five years later, the hulling mill was raised 4.5 metres to a tower mill. The corn and peel mill has a stone base and a roof covered with roofing leather. Both rods are self-swinging and have a flight of 21 m (about 70 feet). One of the rods is fitted with a streamline nose with brake valve. The mill was equipped with one pair of grinding stones and one peeling stone in 1981, but previously had two pairs of grinding stones. Remarkably, the stone attic is also a rack attic: the grinding attic is one storey 'too low', so to speak.
Stel's Meulen is open every second Saturday of the month as part of Rondje Harkstede and Rondje Midden-Groningen. Come along then and enjoy this amazing mill! Moreover, the mill is one of the stamping points of the Pronkjewailpad, a long-distance walking path through Groningen.
