The Oldambtmeer is an artificial lake covering over 800 hectares. It was created as part of Blauwestad, a major residential and leisure development. At the beginning of the 16th century, there was already a small lake on this site: the Hunginga Lake, formed by the frequent flooding in this peatland area. The name Huninga refers to the family that owned a large part of the area at the time. When the peat was excavated, the Huningameer dried up, after which the area was used for agriculture for a long time. With the plans for Blauwestad, the area was (once again) designated for recreational use. There are two sandy beaches with safe swimming areas, and various walking and cycling paths have been laid out around the lake. There are ample mooring facilities and well-equipped marinas for boats. Three marinas are situated directly on the Oldambtmeer.
