Veenborg Welgelegen
From the seventeenth century onwards, many administrators and entrepreneurs from the city of Groningen moved to the peat area to live. Here they lived 'outside' and there was also a good living to be had in peat digging.

Several peat bogs sprang up: country houses whose names (Weltevreden, Sorgvliet) mainly underlined the pleasure of living there. One such country house is Welgelegen. The peat farm was founded in 1655 by Jan Cornelis Spiel, a participant in the Borgercompagnie. This was a partnership of Groningen citizens who were involved in peat extraction. It was not until around 1740 that the borg got its current appearance. Until the early 1900s, the borg was occupied by several prominent families, after which the house fell into disrepair. It deteriorated so much that it was decided to demolish it. Eventually, the borg was bought by Cornelis Alexander Star Numan, a descendant of former residents. He had the borg and the garden fully restored. The borg and garden have since been designated a national monument.
