In the 19th century, the threat of war waned and the population increased rapidly. Reason enough to demolish the ramparts to make expansion possible. Between Reitdiep and Boterdiep a romantic long and narrow walking park in English landscape style was created. Landscape architect Copijn used the partly still existing moats and ramparts for his ponds and sloping lawns. The planting is diverse, with as many as 50 different species of trees in the parkland, many with nameplates. The park also has a rich Stein flora, including woodland yellow star and yellow anemone. The park features artworks by Jan van Baren, Gjalt Blaauw, Bas Lugthart, Thees Meesters and Wladimir de Vries. In 1971, the entire park was designated a national monument. Noorderplantsoen is also known for the annual theatre and dance event Noorderzon.
