Take a closer look

The church of Noordbroek was built in the early 14th century and is a high point of romanogothic In Groningen. The detached Romanesque tower, popularly called 'Ol' Dodde' (old fat one), is older than the church itself. The church features several wall and vault paintings. These include a depiction of Adam, Eve and the serpent, images of the evangelists and a particularly evocative depiction of the Last Judgement. The mighty organ was built in 1696 by Arp Schnitger. The instrument was later modified by Albertus Antoni Hinsz (1768) and H.H. Freytag (1808). In 1967, the church was almost closed because some municipal council factions preferred to spend the money needed for maintenance on a new swimming pool. In the end, a small majority in the municipal council ensured that the church was preserved, thankfully because it is a gem.
