Pancratius Church

In the middle of the northern Groningen village of Godlinze stands the Romano-Gothic Pancratius Church. A church where much has changed over the years, but is still full of character.

Take a closer look

Godlinze's Pancratius Church was built in the 13th century. Initially, the church was built of peatstone, a type of volcanic stone. But later they decided to raise the church with brick anyway. The church's gabled tower was built in several phases. The lower part dates from around 1200. In the 16th century, the tower was raised, after which it was repaired several more times. In 1571, five years after the Iconoclasm, a major renovation took place. Parts of the oldest painting from the 13th century can still be seen on the choir vault. These include some animal figures symbolising the evangelists. The bell dates from 1435 and is dedicated to the patron saint of the church: St. Pancratius.
