Until 1877, excess water from the northwest of the province was drained naturally to the sea via the Reitdiep. After the Reidiep was partly closed off with a dike, this could no longer be done. To still be able to keep the land dry, the province and the state decided to build a pumping station: the Waterwolf. Construction of the pumping station started in 1918 and two years later Queen Wilhelmina opened it. The pumping station was the first electrically powered pumping station in the Netherlands and one of the largest of its kind. After its opening, it was even the largest pumping station in Europe for a while. Nearby, the Waterwolf is also called Electra, named after the water board by which the pumping station was built and managed for a long time. Today, the building is listed as a national monument.
