Mill The Seagull

In 1943, the mill was restored. The name "De Meeuw" was given on 2 October 1943 at the official inauguration after an extensive restoration by the well-known Groningen mill expert B. v.d. Veen Czn.

Also in later years, the mill was restored several times, 1947, 1967 and 1977. The involvement of the inhabitants of Garnwerd is striking in this respect. During the 1967 restoration, which saved the mill after a period of stagnation and decay, the peeling mechanism was unfortunately largely removed. Only both peeling stones remained: they have since been kept loose at the bottom of the mill.

In 1977, the remaining pair of millstones was made millable. Whether it was milled again after that is not entirely clear. In 2017, that couple was thoroughly checked again and since then, it has indeed been milling with some regularity.

In 2005, tail beam and braces were renewed; in 2008 and 2009, maintenance was carried out: fence and hem slats replaced and four new sails delivered. In the spring of 2009, a new long shoot was staked, the rods were cut, and shelf and rack braces were replaced. In April 2019, the miller determined that turning was no longer possible: the joint bolts had sagged too far and will need to be replaced or at least revised.

The mill will be fully grinding again in 2026.
