Ezinge gained international renown through the excavations carried out by archaeologist A. E. Van Giffen in the 1920s and 1930s. These excavations uncovered the remains of 85 farmhouses and 60 outbuildings dating from 600 BC to the fifth century AD. The discovery of a gold sword pommel from Ezinge, dating from the 7th century, was particularly significant. It is comparable to the one found in the Sutton Hoo royal burial mound in England.

The fact that so many valuable finds have been made here is largely due to the village being built on a ‘wierde’. This is an artificial mound that was raised to protect the inhabitants from seawater. Over the centuries, the height of the mound increased slightly due to the accumulation of fertiliser. As a result, the various layers of habitation formed an archaeological treasure trove. Following the introduction of dykes, many mounds were levelled. The Ezinge mound has been preserved to this day.
Museum Wierdenland provides a wealth of information about the origins of these mounds.
