During the Eighty Years’ War (1566–1648), the Spanish built the Zoutkamp defensive redoubt. By the end of the 18th century, the redoubt had fallen into considerable disrepair. The French reinforced the defences by building a rampart, equipped with a row of cannons – in other words, a battery.
The Oude Kerk was built in 1836 on the north-eastern bastion of de fort. Until then, the residents of Zoutkamp had attended church in Vierhuizen and were buried there. The nieuwe kerkhof was only in use from 1855 to 1895 and was already full by then. Among those buried here is Sebo Huininga Woldringh. In 2010, the old bastion ‘De Dikke Wal’ was restored. The church is now mainly used for funeral and wedding services, as well as for celebrations and parties.
