In the A-kwartier (Vishoek), a bust of a woman stands on a pedestal. With this, artist Anne Wenzel pays tribute to the women who shaped – and continue to shape – the character of the A-kwartier, but whose names have not gone down in history.

Where there were harbours, there was prostitution. Until a few years ago, a predominantly red glow shone through the streets here. For centuries, this neighbourhood was home to the ladies of the night. Now there is only one left: the bust of a woman, created by Anne Wenzel. Thanks to this bust, the ladies still define the streetscape of the A-kwartier. According to Wenzel, they are rarely honoured with a monument. This does not mean that they are unimportant – quite the contrary. Sometimes, even the small, everyday deeds are of greater importance to society than the grand deeds that make global headlines. That is why Wenzel has created a monument to women as human beings, with all their beauty, strength and vulnerability.
