Location
Working together to tackle the plastic soup in the Wadden Sea Right in the middle of the Wadden Sea, between Ameland and Schiermonnikoog, lies the Rif, a beautiful sandbank. Due to the sea currents, a great deal of rubbish ends up here: vacuum cleaner hoses, fishing nets, ropes, shoes, Maggi bottles, debris from an F-16, etc. Whatever humans have dumped, the sea deposits there.
The Rif is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and can only be reached by boat, a journey of a few hours…
The Rif is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is only accessible by boat for a few hours a day. From Lauwersoog, we sail with the current to this unique spot, run aground, explore the mudflats and gather as much as we can of what the sea has left at our feet. We sometimes have to lug our stuff around like mad, but at the same time it feels like a huge honour to be able to do this. Clearing up has never been so much fun. Because you can see that you’re actually doing something to make the world a more beautiful place, and that gives you an absolutely brilliant feeling. Back in Lauwersoog, we dump the rubbish in the bins, maybe have a fish to eat, take one last look at the sea and head home with a big grin: “We did the mudflats!”
You can also come to us for low-tide walks, shorter walks in the fresh air and beachcombing trips.
