For many Stadjers, the smell of sugar beet is part of autumn. When the wind came from the southwest, the whole city could smell that the campaign had started again.

In 2008, Suiker Unie closed the doors of its factory on the western ring road, but the immense site (125 hectares) remains impressive. Some of the buildings have been demolished, but the oldest building still stands proudly. As does the monumental chimney pipe. Today, the site is used for various cultural events.
