Borg Rusthoven

Borg Rusthoven is a distinguished country house. According to the gable stone, the borg was built in 1686. Probably by Johan Eeck (jr.), the son of a mayor of Groningen.

In 1804, the borg was sold to brick manufacturer Jan Hendrik Sissingh. At the time, there was an increasing demand for bricks and the location of the borg on Damsterdiep was ideal for Sissingh. He had a brick factory built next to the borg. The peat needed from the Veenkolonien could thus be brought in very easily. The factory was called the tichelwerk (tichel stands for stone or pottery). Rusthoven is therefore called a tichelborg. In 1965, the company went bankrupt.

The borg has since been restored. The factory no longer belongs to the borg and has fallen into disrepair over time.
The borg is privately owned and not freely accessible.
