Heiligen Geest, Pelstergasthuis
This is the city’s oldest guesthouse. It is first mentioned in 1267, when Pope Clement IV instructed the Bishop of Utrecht to consecrate the cemetery.

It was founded as early as the 12th century by the Order of the Holy Spirit Masters, a medieval order dedicated to caring for the poor, the sick and pilgrims. Their emblem, a double white cross on a black oval shield, can be seen in several places. The guesthouse, with its five courtyards, was situated close to the Herepoort and served not only as an inn but also as a hospital. After the Reformation, the almshouse sold off the infirmary and, as in most almshouses, began to house the elderly. The church is built in the Gothic style and has a Neoclassical façade on the street side dating from 1855. The turret houses the town’s oldest bell (1459).
