Museum Wierdenland

Near the city of Groningen lies the oldest cultural landscape in the Netherlands, the National Landscape Middag-Humsterland. The road winds through the land and you can see for miles around you.

Take a closer look

Here, from the early Iron Age, people lived on mounds, artificially raised residential mounds. They are the treasure troves of the northern coastal region. In Museum Wierdenland, you can learn about this vast landscape and its history of habitation and the history of the centuries-long battle against the rising waters of the North Sea and Wadden Sea. Combine a visit to the exhibitions with a cycling tour led by one of our guides or discover with your (grand)children how prehistoric people lived on a mound.
