The Kruger family's farm De Pannekoek was a coming and going of refugees, as were many other farms in the area. The Kruger family provided shelter to conscientious objectors and Jewish people in hiding during the war.
And from the last months of 1944, also to malnourished children from the Randstad and evacuees from Limburg. But refugees also came from nearby. In the last days of the war, there was heavy fighting in the area. Jannie Wieringa-Kruger, the youngest daughter of the Kruger family, later recalled, "One thing I have never forgotten: all those refugees coming straight to our farm, right through the fields from Holwierde and Nansum."
