In 1918, the Agricultural Workers Act was introduced. This law allowed agricultural workers to buy a house with a piece of land so that they could also plant a vegetable garden.

They paid off the cost of this on a weekly basis. Such houses were also built in Warffum in the 1930s for agricultural workers from the area. The cottages stood on the grounds of the Stichting Landarbeid. The houses have since been designated as national monuments.
