Route 30: De Beetse Sellingen

This hiking trail is not accessible with dogs!

Sellingen is one of the oldest villages in Westerwolde. Officially, its 'year of birth' is 857, but by then the first priest had already set foot there. It is an esdorp with brink, well situated on the stream valley of the Ruiten Aa.

The walk goes through a varied area of small woods, wooded banks, meadows and fields and it is mainly thanks to the intransigence of the Sellingers that we can still enjoy it today. In fact, the Kikkert plan had 6,000 ha of military training grounds planned for this area in the early 1970s. Fortunately, the plan fell through.

You will meet beautiful examples of all Westerwold landscapes during this walking route: ash trees with wide views, brook valleys with grassy, flowery river banks and here and there old farms, moors and forests.

Staatsbosbeheer manages the Sellinger woods and the natuurgebied Ter Borg. At 60 hectares, the heathland near the hamlet of Ter Borg is the largest in the province of Groningen.
