Route 32: Giezelbaarg Onstwedde

|
3 hours 10 minutes (14 km)

On this route, you’ll walk alongside the Pagediep, the Mussel Aa Canal and the Giezelbaarg. This route is 14 kilometres long.

The first section of the Giezelbaargroute runs alongside the Pagediep and, after the bend, alongside the Mussel Aa Canal, which was dug in the early 1900s, together with the Ruiten Aa Canal and the Boelo Tijdens Canal. Large-scale peat extraction led to flooding throughout Westerwolde. The Mussel Aa and the Ruiten Aa were unable to drain the water sufficiently, partly due to the 12-metre difference in elevation between Ter Apel and Nieuweschans. Boelo Tijdens was the driving force behind the canalisation of Westerwolde.

On the left-hand side is Sterenborg. The Sterenborg farmstead first appears in the Hoenderregister of 1568. Now, over 400 years later, the Sterenborg family still lives on this site.

Ter Wupping takes its name from a ‘wip op wippinge’, an old-fashioned crane used for loading and unloading ships. The Oosterholtsdiep was navigable in those days.

The Guild Book of 1808 from Veele has been preserved. It sets out the rights and duties of the residents. The midwinter horn blowers of Veele organise the annual Midwinter Horn Walk, which starts and ends at Joling’s farm at number 19.

The Giezelbaarg looks like a burial mound but is actually a sand dune dating from the last ice age. Until 1803, it was the site where sentences were carried out that had previously been handed down at the Burcht in Wedde. At the end of the 16th century, 22 men and women were executed on charges of witchcraft.

In Wessinghuizen stands the Marketeken, the skyline of Wessinghuizen – both a landmark and a meeting place.

In the area around the Roege Berg in Ter Wupping, you can see various river dunes dating back to the last ice age, when fast-flowing rivers and streams carried sand and stones there and deposited them. The Roege Berg itself is a splendid example of this.

There used to be a windmill at the Molenpaal, which was moved to the start of Ter Wuppingerweg around 1855. In 1954, the windmill sustained so much storm damage that it was demolished.
