Autumn outings with children in South-east Groningen

Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons to go out with children. The forests turn red, orange and yellow, it is time again for hot chocolate and there are fun activities everywhere. There is plenty to do in the regions this autumn, from cool and magical walks to creative craft afternoons. These are our tips for a wonderful autumn with the whole family.

Enchanting Sellingen

On 1 November 2025, Westerwolde will transform into a magical setting. Foundation Walking in Westerwolde and Foundation Heksje Hasje will organise a special evening walk of about 5 km. The path will be illuminated by hundreds of lights and you will experience fairytale moments along the way, inspired by local folk tales and the mystique of the landscape.

Heiligerlee experience route

Fancy an adventurous walk full of history? In Heiligerlee, you walk along the spot where the Battle of Heiligerlee took place in 1568. Along the way, you will encounter special experience spots and discover traces of the past. Thanks to the interactive elements, the route is also exciting and educational for children.

With the STAR steam train

Stap on the steam train for a ride between Veendam and Stadskanaal. During October Children's Month, children up to 12 years of age travel for free. This is possible on Sundays and Wednesdays in the autumn holidays. Take the Railway Quiz on the way, go on a bear hunt on the train or visit the museum and learn all about how trains used to travel around the region.

Tenaxx

At Dinopark Tenaxx, there is again plenty to do during the autumn holidays. Children can carve pumpkins, admire birds of prey or take part in a lantern contest. And in the evening? Then, during Night of the Dinolights, the park transforms into a fairytale world full of magic and lights. A fun autumn outing you won't soon forget!

Oostwold Airport

Want to see autumn from above? From Oostwold Airport, you can take a sightseeing flight over Groningen, Drenthe or even the Wadden Islands. For the truly adventurous, there are flights in historic aircraft. From the restaurant at the airport, you can enjoy the activities at the airport such as parachuting, flying lessons and in the Heritage Hanger there is a special collection of heritage to admire.

Creative with pumpkins

Nothing says autumn like a pumpkin. At the Gasterij, there will be crafts with pumpkins, straw and autumn materials on 16 October. And on 22 October at Landgoed Ennemaborg, children can use knives and spoons to give their pumpkin a face. Exciting or cheerful, anything goes. Two fun days to get creative with the pumpkin.

Wedderbergen playground

In the autumn holidays, Playground Wedderbergen packs a big punch. Besides the playground, there is a special programme with children's bingo, lantern rides, a glow-in-the-dark disco and even an exciting forest game. Whether you like crafts, horror or dancing, there is something for every child here.
