Christmas in Bourtange

As the days grow shorter, Fort Bourtange colours in winter light. Thousands of lights twinkle between bastions and bridges; dozens of Christmas trees give the historic fortress a warm glow. With almost a hundred stalls, the Christmas market in Bourtange is the place to take home the Christmas atmosphere. Whether you want to tinker yourself and find new inspiration, need all the supplies to make something beautiful, or opt for ready-made, atmospheric decorations and gifts: you will find it here. From handmade decorations and artisanal treats to unique home accessories, there is something for everyone. Little kids will feast their eyes on the street theatre and light shows. Once you arrive at the market square, you will be immersed in the cosy bustle. Here you can taste the real magic of Bourtange in December.

Information Christmas market

On Saturday, the Christmas market is open from 11am to 9pm. Tickets cost €4.50 in presale and €5.00 at the box office. On Sunday, you are welcome from 11am to 6pm.
Please note that dogs are unfortunately not allowed, to keep the visit as pleasant as possible for both animals and people.

The Christmas market takes place on 29 & 30 November, 6 & 7 December and 13 & 14 December 2025.

 

Fort Bourtange

Fort Bourtange was built at the end of the 16th century as a defensive fortification in the Eighty Years' War. From the bastions you could look out for enemies in all directions. Or rather at how enemy troops sank disconsolately into the surrounding marsh. A century later, Bourtange was made famous by Captain Prott. The enemy bishop Bernard van Galen, better known as Bom Berend, tried to bribe Prott with a 'golden bombardment'. An offer of 200,000 guilders or a noble estate in Westphalia. By all accounts, Prott's response was clear: "200,000 bullets you can have!" Bourtange withstood the ensuing attack and the enemy had no choice but to dismount.
