Some things just sound typically Groningen. Like Lieve and Nardia when you hear these two passionate entrepreneurs talk about their boutique Mary Jane. Located on Oosterstraat, they know how to find you a complete outfit. One that totally suits you and you will want to wear for years to come. We spoke to them about their unique venture, experiencing Groningen culture and adding their own ideas to the city.
These boots are made for walking
The name Mary Jane refers to the popular women’s shoes from the 1920s. Here you’ll find the most distinctive shoes. Sometimes handmade, sometimes from Italy, Spain or Portugal, and sometimes even the only pair in the world. Previously, the shop could still be described as a shoe boutique, but recently the two ladies have also started stocking clothing. Since the spring, Mary Jane’s clothes racks have featured a number of clothing brands that were not previously available in Groningen. High-quality products are the priority here, and the collection is curated with great care. You’ll walk out the door dressed to the nines after a delightful shopping experience.
Together, Groningen
What do Lieve and Nardia love so much about running a business in Groningen? “It’s a big city, with the feel of a small village.” For them, the sense of community is what makes Groningen so special. Proud entrepreneurs work together to put Groningen firmly on the map. Mary Jane fits in well with this city, as they’ve noticed that Groningen is always striving to innovate and become more sustainable. This really appeals to the pair, as they believe it’s important to bring innovation to the world of clothing and footwear. In their view, sustainability is also about taking good care of the things you wear, by investing in quality and pieces that last a long time. Sounds like Groningen.
Once a ‘stadjer’, always a ‘stadjer’
Lieve and Nardia have chosen Groningen. The two creative minds have been living in Groningen for some time and are completely smitten with the city. They’re huge fans of the many small and unique businesses that offer something different from the big chains. That’s what makes Groningen special, and Mary Jane fits right in. “You can easily get from one end of the city to the other, so everything’s within easy reach. At the same time, there’s plenty to do to keep you entertained for a whole weekend.” Highly recommended, then, if we’re to believe these city experts. And if you do have to take a stroll through the streets of Groningen, you can do so in style in a pair of Mary Jane shoes.
